Qatar is planning a world-class road, rail and air network, and is spending $20bn building new roads and updating the existing network. A five-lane 190 km expressway is being constructed to connect Ras Laffan in the North to Mesaieed in the South. It will also include a train network that will be only used for the transport of goods, as well as separate lanes for light and heavy vehicles. Plans are also in place for a Metro/Light Railway Train network, BRT/Tram lines and a network of buses to provide smooth access, frequent services and fast connections.
Doha’s brand new International Airport (NDIA), due to open in 2013, will set new standards in passenger convenience and services. The new hub for Qatar Airways, it will be a major international gateway handling more than 24 million passengers a year. As the airport develops it will eventually be capable of handing double that number of passengers.
